A study of Psychiatric Illness Described in Modern Korean Novels
Park Sang-Hag

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Many factors affect the choice of treatment methods, result and prognosis of psychiatric illness. In this study, I want to find the view point about psychiatric illness and patients of modern Korean writers and general populations.

Material and Methods: For the study of psychiatric illness described in modern Korean novels, I read the 180 novels (Lee Chung Jun et al, 24 writers) published in the Samsung press co.(1984. 11.25, 15th edition)and then checked diagnosis, symptoms, attitude toward illness and patients, prognosis, etiology, treatment, patients¡¯ sex and job, writer, and subjects of novel described in these modern Korean novels.

Results: The most common described illness is the psychotic state(like schizophrenia). Relatively popular psychiatric illness are commonly described in novels also. General populations have negative feelings toward psychiatric patients and illness especially psychosis, epilepsy, opiold addiction and senile dementia. Prognosis of psychosis is all fatal in novels.

Conclusion: In modern Korean novels, descriptions of psychiatric patients show the writers¡¯ viewpoint about psychiatry as well as the general population.
